Trader Joe’s is limiting egg purchases to a dozen per customer as the national egg shortage continues with no sign of abating.
The California-based grocery chain set the cap last week, as farmers in several states continue to battle an outbreak of highly contagious avian influenza — commonly referred to as bird flu.
Those outbreaks have forced farmers to kill millions of chickens per month since the outbreak began in 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, resulting in fewer eggs selling for higher prices at grocery stores. The national average price per dozen eggs reached $4.15 in December.
The federal agency said last month the shortage could last well into next year, with egg prices expected to increase 20% by the end of 2025.
Trader Joe’s is far from the only grocer being affected. Other Portland-area stores, including New Seasons, have struggled to keep eggs on their shelves. Costco recently announced that some eggs or egg products might be unavailable for delivery orders due to the shortage, ABC News reported Monday.
