It proved to be a banner night for the Loggers on Wednesday at home, leaving with an 11-0 victory over the Bulldogs to nab a season series sweep against their 1A Trico opponent.
The 11 goals is the most in a game since Onalaska (3-10, 3-9 Trico) became a program last spring. Adrian Garcia and Angel Cerceda became the first players to record a hat trick and they combined for six assists.
Garcia scored in the 15th, 42nd and 44th minutes while Cerceda opened the scoring with a 12th minute goal. Cerceda also finished off a five-goal first half for the Loggers with a tally in the 30th minute and scored the final goal off a free kick in the 58th minute.
Onalaska head coach Luis Magana pointed to a change in formation to a 3-5-2 that led to an aggressive style of play. It worked with all six goals in the second half coming in the first 18 minutes to end the match early.
“Knowing that we had many opportunities we could not execute when we went to Stevenson was an eye opener that we needed to work on our finishing and today that work paid off,” Magana said. “I was able to move defensive players to offensive roles.”
Other goal scorers for the Loggers were Wyatt Schaener, Aksel Iverson twice, Ethan Gerbracht and eighth grader Mavrek Roundtree. Their goalie Christopher Jaimes did have three saves to record the third clean sheet this season.
“I am happy to give our community a night of lots of scoring on a record breaking night for this young program,” Magana said. “The players and their families definitely deserve to celebrate for all the effort that was put into getting this program started.”
Onalaska gets three of its last four games on the road, which starts with Fort Vancouver on Friday.
