Toledo Picks Up First League Win Against Stevenson

Posted

It wasn’t perfect, by any means, but after messing with its formations and moving players around, the Toledo girls soccer team shut out Stevenson at home for its first league win, 4-0, Monday night.

The unbeaten Riverhawks (6-0, 1-0 in league) scored early, going up 1-0 after Marina Smith scored off an assist from Rose Dillion in the third minute. After that, they had a hard time finishing scoring attempts.

Toledo outshot Stevenson by a significant margin, putting shot after shot right at the goalkeeper for easy saves. In the 20th minute, Dillion found the back of the net herself unassisted, but by halftime, the Riverhawks weren’t happy with themselves.

“We got lost a little bit,” Toledo coach Noel Vazquez said. “We changed the formation and they were able to figure it out. We were out of sync, but at the end of the day we made it work.”

The Riverhawks eventually started to connect on their attacks, with Briza Gallegos scoring unassisted in the 52nd minute and Hope Gould scoring off an assist from Smith in the 63rd to close out the game’s scoring.

Though Toledo is undefeated, and now 1-0 in league play, they’re still looking to improve.

“We left something in the tank,” Vazquez said. “The girls felt like they left goals on the field.”

The Riverhawks will take on Winlock on Wednesday.
