Toledo outlasts PWV in close contest

Ignited by four pitchers and struck out six combined hitters and fending off a late comeback, the Riverhawks clipped the Titans 5-3 in a non-league game on Friday night in Pe Ell.

Gavin Frewing, Kaven Winters, Eli Weeks and Ryker Sorenson teamed to limit PWV at the plate with the middle two pitchers throwing three total innings of no-hit ball. Toledo used two runs in the second and fourth innings to take a three-run cushion and added an insurance run in the sixth.

The Titans didn’t wilt with two runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout off the bat of Lucas Lusk and a wild pitch. They had the tying run in scoring position with two outs, but Sorenson induced a game-ending groundout to preserve the win.

Frewing paced the Riverhawks with three hits while Nico Acosta, Carson Boad and Bayron Rodriguez each drove in a run. Brayden Ruddell notched two hits for PWV with a double and Blane King roped a triple. Connor Keeton tossed six innings and struck out six batters, but gave up 11 hits.

“Errors and mental mistakes will hurt you when the margins are tight,” Titans head coach Kent Smaciarz said. “We missed opportunities early, and when we started to get going we ran out of innings.”
