Toledo city officials take pies to the face for city park fundraiser event during Cheese Days

While the majority of the people at the Toledo Middle School on Saturday, July 11, were there to see the over 260 cars on display for the 26th annual Toledo Cheese Days Car Show, a few were there for a different reason — to throw pies.

Specifically, to throw pies at Toledo Mayor Cherie Devore, Toledo Planning Commission member Kyle Wheeler and Toledo Utilities Clerk Sarah Hazlett.

The lucky pie throwers were Judy Pongratz, who pied Wheeler, Tom Metcalf, who pied Hazlett, and Al Nielen, who pied the mayor.

They threw their pies at their targets at around 3 p.m., though, according to Devore, more pies had been thrown earlier as well. Raffle tickets to throw the pies were sold to car show attendees throughout the day as a fundraiser to benefit the Toledo Parks Department.

“I’ll take pies to the face all day to raise money,” Devore said.

Money raised during the event will go towards maintenance and repairs to Toledo's Kemp Olson Memorial Park, and the Toledo Parks Department’s annual Esther Borte Memorial Walk In The Park.

During her life, Toledo resident Esther Borte quilted and donated many of her creations for fundraising efforts to improve Kemp Olson Park. The annual walks are held every fall in her honor to continue her efforts, following her death in 2016.
