The Napavine girls basketball team kept pace atop the C2BL standings on Saturday, as the Tigers never trailed in a 66-13 win over Winlock.
It was all Tigers right out of the gate, as Napavine (16-2, 9-1 C2BL) jumped out to a 29-2 lead in the first quarter.
“I was really proud of how our starting 5 came out and took care of business early,” Napavine coach Shane Schutz said.
That allowed the bench to get some extended time, and they got better as the game went along. After just nine points in the second quarter, the Tigers scored 28 in the second half, led by eighth-grader Ava Ondong with 16, while freshman Nicholle Valentine added 10. Ten other Tigers also scored.
As impressive as Napavine was offensively, they were even better on defense. The Tigers didn’t allow more than six points in a single quarter, and they blanked the Cardinals (2-13, 1-8 C2BL) in the fourth.
Kindyl Kelly was the Cardinals’ best player offensively, as she scored nine of their 13 points.
At 9-1 in league play, the Tigers remain tied with Adna atop the league standings, but the Pirates took the teams’ matchup on Jan. 11 to give them the tiebreaker.
The Tigers will have their senior night on Thursday against Kalama, while the Cardinals will head to Toutle Lake on Tuesday.
