After six years of service with the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office and a combined total of approximately 400 deployments and more than 250 suspects found or captured, K9 Jaxx and K9 Dexter officially retired on Tuesday.

“(It’s) safe to say that they have definitely earned their retirement,” said the sheriff’s office in a Facebook post announcing the K9s’ retirement.

The dogs will live out their retirements with their respective handlers and their handlers’ families, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office’s K9 unit brought on two new dogs back in February to replace the retiring K9s.

The new K9s, Bowie and Igo, are paired with Deputies Joel Nault and Devin Bagby, respectively.

Both dogs received their K9 certifications at the end of March.

The two newcomers are currently the only members of the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit.

Former Thurston County K9s Daro and Arlo retired at the end of 2020 and early 2021, respectively.
