NASELLE — Winlock was unable to keep pace with the Comets here Thursday night as the home team ran away with a 58-37 victory in non-league girls basketball action.
The Cardinals found themselves down by just eight points at halftime but ran out of gas in the second half as Naselle continued to put the ball through the cylinder. Compounding Winlock’s difficulties was their atrocious free throw shooting. For the game, the Cardinals knocked down just four of 21 freebies for a clip of just 19 percent.
“That was part of the problem,” deadpanned Winlock coach Tori Nelson.
Right out of the intermission Winlock felt like they had something good going on the court but that thrill was short lived.
“We actually scored twice quickly. Things were going well and then we just killed ourselves. We turned the ball over a million times and we didn’t make our free throws and they had 15 offensive rebounds,” said Nelson. “All of that stuff added up.”
Addison Hall led all Cardinals with 21 points while Makayla Albritton chipped in six points. Jenna Jones, Madison Lofberg and Hall all tied for a team-high six rebounds.
Winlock (1-1) will host Kalama in a non-league contest on Wednesday.
Rainier Edges Tenino
RAINIER — The Beavers were close in their second game of a back-to-back, but Rainier was able to hang on for a 39-37 win in a non-league girls basketball game here on Thursday.
Kaylee and Ashley Schow led the Beavers with 12 points each.
Rainier’s Kaeley Schultz led all scorers with 17 points.
Tenino led 9-6 after one quarter and built a 23-14 lead at halftime. It was all Rainier in the second half, including outscoring the Beavers 14-4 in the fourth quarter to come from behind to earn the win.
“I think this wasn’t our best game. Executing offensively, we could have done a better job in that area,” Tenino coach Brandi Thomas said. “Rainier moved the ball well around the perimeter, they did a good job sharing the basketball.”
Tenino (1-1) travels to face Seton Catholic on Saturday in a non-league game in Vancouver.
Lumberjills Chop Down Warriors
ROCHESTER — Paige Winter scored 17 points but it wasn’t enough for the Warriors in a 43-36 loss to R.A. Long in a non-league girls basketball game here on Thursday.
Winter added six rebounds to go with her 17 points. Lexi Jones-Sederberg scored 13 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Eastyn Reeves tied Winter with a game-high 17 points.
Each team scored 10 points in the first quarter and eight points in the second for an 18-18 stalemate at halftime.
R.A. Long outscored Rochester 15-10 in the third, allowing the Lumberjills to hang on for the win in the fourth quarter.
“We struggled from the outside shooting tonight. We had a such a good first night, a lot of things to learn from for sure,” Rochester coach Davina Serdahl said. “They’ve got a good ball club, their guards are quick. We didn’t handle that too well, we’ll get better. It’s a learning process.”
Rochester (1-1) plays next on Saturday hosting Hudson’s Bay in a non-league game.
Eagles Fly By Tigers
ELMA — Elma shutout Napavine in the first quarter to cruise to a 56-11 in a non-league girls basketball game here on Thursday.
Napavine’s Marissa Segers led the way with four points. Vannie Fagerness scored three points and Riley Beeson and Sydney Purvis each scored two points.
Jalyn Sackrider led all scorers with 20 points.
Elma led 17-0 after one quarter and expanded the lead to 36-5 at intermission.
“We played hard. Our inexperience showed against a really good Elma team,” Napavine coach Shane Schutz said. “That’s why we play these games, it tends to make us better. We’ve got to get better. We weren’t really surprised either way and we have to find a way to continue to grow.”
Napavine (0-1) hosts King’s Way Christian on Monday in a non-league game.
Ocosta Gets Over on Trojans
PE ELL — Ocosta started hot and surged past the Trojans in the second half here Thursday on their way to a 64-30 victory in 2B non-league girls basketball play.
The Wildcats were led in scoring by Kristi Raffelson’s 15 points. As a team Ocosta was able to out rebound Pe Ell 40-35 in order to help secure the road win.
After finding themselves down by 16 points at the intermission Pe Ell came out hot in the third quarter and wound up even with the Wildcats for a quarter at least as both teams put up 15 points in the third frame.
“There was a point in time there where we pulled within eight in the third quarter. We had a little momentum and had them on the ropes,” said Pe Ell coach Chris Phelps.
However, a technical foul on a substitution error led to a pair of free throws for Ocosta and zapped the Trojan’s comeback on the spot. In the fourth quarter Pe Ell wound up getting outscored 20-2.
“We got tired, out of position and sent them to the free throw line a lot in the fourth quarter,” said Phelps. “They are a good team and they are poised for a good season.”
Katie Davis led all Trojan scorers with 10 points.
Pe Ell (0-1) will play at Chief Leschi on Saturday.
