Thunderbirds pull away late to defeat Tigers

The Tumwater and Centralia softball teams were scoreless through four innings at Fort Borst Park on Tuesday, but the T-Birds pulled away in the late innings and went on to claim a 6-0 victory.

Ella Ferguson and Hollynn Wakefield were locked in a pitcher’s duel early, and Tumwater finally opened the scoring in the fourth on an RBI single from Chloe Foos.

Ferguson helped herself with an RBI double later in the inning, and Jamie Haase hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

As the T-Birds tacked on some insurance in the sixth and seventh, Ferguson continued to dominate in the circle. She finished off the shutout in the seventh, ending up with five strikeouts and just two walks in the complete-game effort.

She also finished with two hits at the plate, as did Zoe Fields, and Marissa La Praim finished 3 for 4. La Praim and Fields both drove in a run, as did Sarah Stevens.

Mackenzie Erickson and Chloe Bonomi both logged two hits, but the rest of the Centralia lineup combined to go 3 for 22.

Wakefield ended up pitching into the sixth before giving way to McKenna Smith, who pitched the final inning and two-thirds.

It’s a quick turnaround for both teams, as Centralia (4-3, 2-2 2A EvCo) will head to Shelton and Tumwater (5-1, 3-0 2A EvCo) will return home to host Aberdeen on Wednesday.
