A complete team performance helped Tenino on Tuesday night in Hoquiam, where the Beavers rolled to a dominant 5-0 victory over the Grizzlies.
“It was a lot of fun tonight,” Tenino co-head coach Trevor Fetbrant said. “We talk about having complete performances, and it felt like tonight was one of our best versions of that.”
It took Maria Summers just two minutes to get on the board, and Kyla Watson added another just seven minutes to make it 2-0. Mikeala Cutlip made it 3-0 just eight minutes later.
Summers added a second early in the second half, and late in the game, Callie Mickelson scored to get the Beavers to five. Sophie Espino added two assists, Summers had one of her own, and Kylie Gonia and Kyla Watson also both added corners.
With the postseason around the corner, Fetbrandt and fellow co-head coach Dave Montgomery gave plenty of minutes to players up and down the roster, and every Beaver that took the field contributed.
“It was awesome to play with a lot of swing players and the level didn’t drop,” Summers said.
By the end of the night, the Beavers had outshot the Grizzlies 34-2, and they had 12 corner kicks without allowing one.
Fetbrandt said that it was nice to “check so many boxes of progress,” and Montgomery was happy to see a strong performance with the regular season coming to a close.
“We want to finish strong to be able to have that home game,” Montgomery said. “Even potentially the second round and that third round of districts, we’re the host. What a great opportunity for us to win at least two games to go to state. Everything is right in front of us.”
Fetbrandt also gave a shout out to Chloe Grayless, saying it “was as close to a complete game as she’s had,” and Montgomery commended Summers for her attitude and fortitude, calling her “a pitbull out there.”
Tenino (10-3-2, 5-2 1A Evergreen) will return home on Thursday to host Rochester in its regular-season finale.
“I’m really proud of the team as a whole,” Espino said. “We do work as a team instead of having our attacking players be the standout players. We play well as a team.”
