The Tenino volleyball team got about as close to winning as possible in King County on Monday without actually pulling out the victory, falling in five sets to The Bush School, 17-25, 20-25, 26-24, 25-23, 16-14.

After taking the first two sets, the Beavers (1-2) lost the final three by a combined six points, for their second five-set loss in a row.

“Our girls showed true grit,” Tenino coach Shauna Carpenter said. “Defensively, we were solid. We made a few mental mistakes, and Bush took advantage.”

Brooke Bratton led the Beavers with a 16-kill, 10-dig double-double, and added four assists and two aces.

Katen Burkhardt similarly filled out the statsheet, with 18 assists, a team-high 16 digs, four kills, a block, and an ace. Fellow set Macy Griffis had 15 assists and 10 digs, with four kills, Brianna Asay had 11 digs and six kills, and Jaeleen Woodward posted six digs along with a team-high five aces.

Tenino will be back home on Brock Court on Wednesday, facing Northwest Christian.
