Tenino Receives $350,000 Grant for Quarry House

Tenino’s Quarry House will be renovated to the tune of $350,000, thanks to a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) that Thurston County approved Thursday, May 23.

The Quarry House was originally the quarry office and headquarters of Tenino Sandstone Company and has been in the city for over 100 years, according to the press release. It is now used as a community center in Tenino City Park.

“A commercial quality kitchen, introduction of broadband internet and restoration of the original wood and stoneworks are the primary focus of this project,” said Mayor Wayne Fournier in the press release. “Tenino has been extremely fortunate this past year, and we intend to maximize these grant dollars in order to provide our citizens with facilities they can enjoy for many years to come.”

Cities such as Tenino, Yelm, Rainier and Bucoda are classified as “entitlement” communities, meaning they do not have to compete with each other for CDBG funds.

Instead, these communities negotiate amongst themselves as to the allotment of grant money given to each city. To that effect, Yelm and Bucoda will also receive funds this year.
