T-Birds break through enough to beat W.F. West

The W.F. West girls soccer team did its best to make things hard at the back, but Tumwater got through once early and once late to come away with a hard-earned 2-0 victory Tuesday in 2A EvCo play.

“We came in with a plan knowing we wouldn’t have as much of the ball this game,” WFW coach Kevin Schultz said. “For the larger part of the game, I think we executed the plan and did a good job frustrating our opponent.”

The upset bid was made that much harder by an early hole, with Emalyn Shaffer putting the hosts ahead 1-0 inside of two minutes.

The 1-0 scoreline would hold for over an hour of gametime, until the W.F. West defense turned the ball over to Reese Heryford, who doubled the lead in the 68th.

Staysha Fluetsch made six save for the Bearcats (2-4, 2-1 2A EvCo), while Schultz nodded to Paisley Ridgway for helping to lead the defensive effort.

The Thunderbirds (6-0, 3-0 2A EvCo) will host Shelton on Thursday, while W.F. West will host the first leg of the Chronicle Cup at Bearcat Stadium.
