Police shot a person during a seven-hour standoff in rural Thurston County, after another person was found dead in a residence and a sheriff’s deputy was injured, police say.
Thurston County sheriff’s deputies responded around 9 p.m. Tuesday to a domestic disturbance call about a dead person inside a residence on the 600 block of Nieland Loop Southeast in Rainier, southwest of Yelm, according to a news release shared by Sheriff Derek Sanders.
Upon arriving at the scene, deputies found a “resident in crisis” and asked them to stay outside while medics went inside, but the person went in and locked the doors, police said.
Two deputies tried to force their way into the residence, but the person fired shots through the door, police said. One deputy shot back, and the other suffered an “immobilizing leg injury” while running from the gunfire. Neither deputy was shot.
The injured deputy was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
A seven-hour standoff ensued. SWAT responded, and the person inside the home shot at law-enforcement officers and an armored tactical vehicle numerous times until a SWAT sniper returned fire and injured them non-fatally, police said.
The SWAT team then used armored vehicles to tear a hole into the bathroom where the armed person was hiding, police said. The suspect eventually surrendered.
The Region 3 Critical Incident Investigation Team will investigate the police shooting.
Police did not say Wednesday morning who the dead person inside the house was and if there was a connection to the suspect or the incident. The circumstances behind the originally reported domestic disturbance also were not yet clear. The condition of the person shot by the SWAT sniper is unknown.
