A suspect with an axe charged at two sheriff’s deputies near Wilsonville during a traffic stop Friday evening, resulting in at least one of the deputies shooting the person, the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office said.

Paramedics quickly arrived and took the suspect to a local hospital in “critical condition,” officials said. The name of the suspect has not been released, and no further information about the person is currently available.

Neither of the deputies was injured.

The incident began around 5:45 p.m. after deputies responded to a call about a “domestic disturbance involving a moving vehicle,” the sheriff’s office reported. The deputies, whose names have not yet been released, stopped and approached a car near Southwest Stafford Road and 65th Avenue in unincorporated Clackamas County. That’s when the “lone occupant” of the car came at the deputies with the axe, according to officials.

The two deputies have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.

The Clackamas County Interagency Major Crimes Team is investigating the shooting, led by detectives from the Lake Oswego and West Linn police departments.
