A Tacoma man suspected of stabbing three of his housemates and setting their recovery home on fire in January now faces a homicide charge after one of the housemates died last week from his injuries.
Three people were hospitalized after the Jan. 20 attack and blaze, which sent a man with severe stab wounds fleeing into the front yard with his body still on fire. One of those injured, an unidentified adult man, died last Tuesday, the Tacoma Police Department said Thursday in a statement.
Pierce County prosecutors charged Andrew Keen, 29, two days after the fire with first-degree arson and four counts of second-degree attempted murder. He is being held in Pierce County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail, records show.
Tacoma police were first warned about Keen shortly after 4 a.m. Jan. 20, when a man identifying himself as Keen’s father called 911 to report his son had sent him a message saying he was “going to kill some people.”
Officers responding to a flurry of 911 calls over the next 30 minutes found three people stabbed and a house burning on the corner of South 34th and South Madison streets. Witnesses identified the suspect as Keen, who had moved into the shared substance-use recovery home three days before.
One housemate told investigators that the day before the fire, Keen got into an argument with another resident that turned violent overnight, court records show.
Police arrested Keen later that morning outside a nearby 7-Eleven. He had a soot-covered wound on his hand and was standing near a bloody box of matches, according to court records.
