TUKWILA — For the second consecutive state tournament, W.F. West High School bowler Savanna Hoyt-Siler left with some hardware.
The junior put up a six-game pin total of 1,009 to place eighth among the rest of the Class 1A/2A field on Friday night in the individual portion of the two-day tournament held at Bowlero Lanes in Tukwila.
While the placement and final tally dropped a bit from last winter, Hoyt-Siler remained upbeat and positive following the award ceremony.
“I’m so grateful I was able to come to state,” Hoyt-Siler said. “I expected more from myself, but I am proud.”
The Bearcats are sitting in fourth place in the team race with 4,539 pins heading into Saturday’s 14 Baker games. Rochester, at state as a team for the first time in school history, is vying for a top-five finish at 4,278 pins.
District 4 dominated day one with Hudson’s Bay and reigning team champion R.A. Long at first and second. Hudson’s Bay also went 1-2 in the individual tournament.
“We’re in a good position,” Hoyt-Siler said. “We’re going to come back tomorrow and do some damage.”
It was a consistent six games for Hoyt-Siler, the district champion averaged 170 pins in the first four games and broke out in game No. 5 with a 183 to leap into the top-five of the standings with a game to go.
Some spares were missed in the final game, but it was more than enough to garner a medal.
“I was throwing the ball (well) today, but the racks weren't setting right,” Hoyt-Siler said. “I got very unlucky.”
The right-hander was the lone area medalist.
Tumwater’s Nevaeh Williams came 11 pins away from jumping into the top-12, but fell one place shy of a medal with a six-game total of 978. Black Hills’ Ella Goheen secured a top-20 finish, tying for 16th with a 949.
Centralia’s Lily Guerrero placed 23rd with a 928 as the other individual that qualified. Rochester’s best finisher was Natalie Southard, slotting in at 22nd with a 929.
