Spring chinook salmon fishing season set for Columbia River

Posted

Spring chinook salmon fishing will begin March 1 in the lower Columbia River and tentatively last through April 5 from Buoy 10 to Bonneville Dam.

From the dam upriver to the Oregon-Washington border, fishing is set for April 1 through May 2.

Only one hatchery chinook is allowed daily within the two-fish hatchery salmon/steelhead bag limit.

Biologists from Oregon and Washington set the seasons Wednesday in Vancouver.

The caveat is the potential for earlier closures if catch rates climb more quickly than anticipated.

Managers will meet after each closure to determine the run’s progress.

Run updates, largely based on Bonneville crossings, typically occur in May, after which more fishing may be possible.

The states also approved a two-day white sturgeon retention fishery (one per day) for Saturday (Feb. 24) and Wednesday (Feb. 28) between The Dalles and John Day dams.
