Spanish-English Cinema Opens in Chehalis

The “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” film, with Spanish subtitles, opens today as the shuttered theater at Yard Birds Mall in Chehalis gets another chance at business.

Cinema 3 was closed in March by its owner, Daryl Lund, who cited competition from the nearby and relatively new 10-screen Midway Cinemas at the Lewis County Mall.

A Centralia-based group called Morris-Hill Productions has been gearing up to show Hollywood films with Spanish subtitles as well as Mexican movies with English subtitles.         “The theater will open, much as it has in the past, with three movies,” spokesperson Ceci Mano said on Thursday.

Besides the X-Men, two Mexican movies, one which is an adult comedy and the other a horror film, will be showing. Both have English subtitles, she said.

The movie house will be doing business as Cinema 3, she said.

Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $5 for children, matinees and those over 65.

Scott White, a member of the group, has said he believes it would be the first Spanish language cinema in the Northwest.

The change at Yard Birds comes just one week after Club el Rey de Oros made its debut there. The dance hall features live music, and plans include bringing Mexican bands to the venue, according to owner Antonio Lopez.
