Small hired to restore Alexander Park

Connie Small has been hired by the Chehalis Foundation to restore Alexander Park.

Small, Chehalis, was in charge of building Penny Playground, which opened in 1993 at Recreation Park, and of restoring Westside Park, which was sponsored by the city with volunteer help. She also served as the director of Lewis County Red Cross from 1996 to late 2000.

More recently, she handled real estate at Stillwater Estates and engaged in community work.

Alexander Park, west of the Mint City's downtown district, was donated to Chehalis in 1920 by the Alexander family. The city operated the park until the early 1980s, when it was turned over to the Boy Scouts owing to a lack of resources. The Scouts kept it up for a decade until liability became an issue.

"It's been used for undesirable activity and garbage dumping for 10 years," Small said.

Small is working with Mason Construction to develop a site plan. Plans include removing accumulated garbage and old playground equipment, grading, adding landfill, and replacing bathrooms and buildings.
