Authorities say a six-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 South in Kelso sent five people to the hospital on Monday afternoon.

The accident occurred at about 1:53 p.m., south of the exit for the Three Rivers Crossing mall, and just about 10 minutes before a two-vehicle I-5 North accident in the same area.

Steven W. Browning, 57, of Portland was traveling too fast for conditions with his passenger Erin B. Browning, 62, of Beaverton, when his 2022 Ford Bronco spun out, according to a Washington State Patrol press memo.

Sophie C. Marshall, 25, of Kirkland and Brian E. Keith, 67, of Enumclaw, tried to move to the left shoulder to avoid Steven Browning's Bronco, but instead hit two other vehicles.

Marshall hit Misty D. Daily, 39, of Winlock and Keith hit Richard C. Whittaker, 78, of Bellingham, as well as Whittaker's passenger Margaret J. Gardner, 73, of Bellingham.

Whittaker's 2003 Mazda MPV van landed in a westbound ditch, the memo states.

Daily then struck a sixth vehicle, a semitruck, driven by Edward G. Carr, 47, of Payette, Idaho.

The Brownings, Daily, Whittaker, and Gardner were injured and transported to Longview's PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center, according to the memo.

Troopers are pursuing speeding charges for Steven Browning, the memo continues. Troopers say neither drugs nor alcohol were involved in the crash.

Everyone in the crash was also wearing their seatbelts.

The Brownings' Bronco and Whittaker's van were totaled.

The rest of the vehicles had reportable damage.
