Sirens: Purple Hearts, other medals stolen; Windows shot out; Child won't go to school, grandmother reports; Man with gun threatens to kill

CENTRALIA POLICE DEPARTMENT 

Criminal trespass 

• A homeless man from Winlock found asleep on private property in the 200 block of South Pearl Street just after 7:25 a.m. on Oct. 6 was trespassed at the owner’s request. 

• An intoxicated disorderly female was reportedly “yelling” in a hotel in the 100 block of North Tower Avenue at 11 p.m. on Oct. 6. Because of the disturbance she was creating, staff asked officers to remove her from the building, but she refused when officers arrived. Officers placed her under arrest for trespassing and called a sober adult to take her home. The woman was cited for trespassing. 

• A 39-year-old Centralia woman was cited for trespassing at a grocery store in the 1100 block of Harrison Avenue at approximately 5:45 p.m. on Oct. 8. 

 

Camping violation 

• Officers responded to a camping complaint in a residential neighborhood at the intersection of North Tower Avenue and East Pine Street just after 8:40 a.m. on Oct. 7. People were reportedly living in a vehicle and dumping trash outside their vehicle. Officer contacted the subjects, advised them of the camping municipal code, and provided them with alternate resources. The people inside the vehicle were given a verbal warning for camping and littering.

 

Theft 

• Just after 9:45 a.m. on Oct. 6, an orange and yellow moped was reported stolen from the 1100 block of Marion Street sometime overnight. 

• A beige and red Little Tykes wagon was reported stolen from the 400 block of Centralia College Boulevard just before 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 6. 

• Two batteries were reported stolen from a collector vehicle in the 600 block of North Tower Avenue just after 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 6. 

• A “grab and run” theft was reported at a business in the 1300 block of Lum Road just before 1:15 p.m. on Oct. 7. Two female suspects reportedly entered the business and ran out of the store with approximately $948 worth of merchandise. The subjects fled in a maroon Sedan toward Interstate 5. An officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but it fled south on I-5 and the officer did not pursue to comply with Washington state pursuit laws, according to the Centralia Police Department.

• A 37-year-old Centralia man was cited for third-degree theft in the 500 block of South Tower Avenue just before 4:25 p.m. on Oct. 7. The man had allegedly attempted to steal items from a business. 

 

Burglary 

• A burglary to an outbuilding in the 1100 block of Centralia College Boulevard that occurred sometime within the last week was reported just after 1:55 p.m. on Oct. 7. Several Vietnam-era medals, including two Purple Heart medals, were reported stolen. 

• Just after 6:55 p.m. on Oct. 7, officers were called to a commercial building in the 600 block of North Tower Avenue for a suspect trespassing in a restricted area that was fenced off. Officers contacted a 22-year-old Chehalis man who was aggressive and then ran when an officer tried to detain him,” according to the Centralia Police Department. Officers “learned that he had been drawing graffiti with a king-size Sharpie pen while in the restricted area.” Officers located him a few blocks away and arrested him. He was booked into the Lewis County Jail for second-degree burglary.

 

Found property 

• At approximately 11:05 a.m. on Oct. 6, a business in the 1300 block of Lum Road reported a lost handbag was turned in. The handbag contained a small plastic bag of suspected meth. 

• A stolen vehicle was recovered in the 100 block of West High Street just after 1:05 p.m. on Oct. 6 after police received a Flock Security Camera alert. 

 

Vehicle accidents

• A non-injury, two-vehicle collision was reported in the 1200 block of Harrison Avenue just before 1:15 p.m. on Oct. 6. 

• A non-injury, two-vehicle collision was reported in the 1200 block of North Pearl Street just before 12:20 p.m. on Oct. 8. 

 

Eluding 

• An officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a male subject riding a “Gold Wing-style motorcycle” in the 900 block of Harrison Avenue just before 12:40 p.m. on Oct. 7, but the subject fled north on Interstate 5. The officer did not pursue the motorcycle in compliance with Washington state pursuit laws, according to the Centralia Police Department. 

 

Harassment 

• Officers responded to a report of a “disorderly male who had told people he was about to ‘snap’” in the 100 block of South Tower Avenue just before 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 7. About 20 minutes later, officers responded to a nearby business after the same male subject, identified as a 65-year-old Shelton man, “threatened to take out a gun and shoot a 16-year-old juvenile and an 18-year-old adult.” The man was cited for felony harassment, threat to kill and was transported to Centralia Providence Hospital for a mental health evaluation. He was not booked into the Lewis County Jail “due to jail booking restrictions,” according to the Centralia Police Department. 

 

Assault 

• A 22-year-old Centralia woman accused of making threats and damaging property in the 300 block of West Summa Street just after 3:45 p.m. on Oct. 8 was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail for harassment. Additional charges of domestic violence forth-degree assault and domestic violence third-degree malicious mischief were referred to the Lewis County Prosecutor’s Office. 

 

Resisting arrest 

• At 1:15 a.m. on Oct. 9, officers contacted a “suspicious male prowling around a closed business” in the 600 block of South Pearl Street. When they contacted the subject, a 37-year-old Kelso man, officers learned he had multiple felony warrants, including warrants for assault and rape of a child. The man reportedly fled on foot when officers attempted to arrest him. “Officers gave chase and caught the man a few blocks away, where he continued to try to struggle,” according to the Centralia Police Department. The suspect “suddenly ‘lost consciousness’ when he was told he was going to jail” and was transported by medics to the hospital. “The Lewis County Jail would not accept him; however, the Cowlitz County Jail said they would (accept him) on a Cowlitz County misdemeanor warrant, with medical clearance. The hospital would not clear him for the jail until he ‘woke up,’” according to the Centralia Police Department. The suspect was ultimately issued a citation for resisting arrest and was released. 

 

CHEHALIS POLICE DEPARTMENT 

Suspicious circumstances 

• At 8:50 a.m. on Oct. 6, a caller in the 1300 block of Northwest State Avenue reported seeing someone possibly posing as a motorcycle officer. The caller noted the motorcycle “didn’t appear to be a police motorcycle,” said the officer was wearing “a police long-sleeve shirt and jeans or blue dress pants” and commented “she’s never seen an officer look like this in their clothes.” Chehalis police confirmed the officer was a Washington State Patrol motorcycle trooper. 

• Just after 11:35 a.m. on Oct. 6, a “male with slurred speech” in the 100 block of Southwest Fifth Street called, “said he was being burglarized,” and hung up. 

• A male subject was reportedly trying to sell jewelry in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue just after 1:15 p.m. on Oct. 6. 

• A male subject was reportedly sitting in a parked vehicle “drinking and smoking (and) watching kids play” at Penny Playground in the 200 block of Southwest 13th Street at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Oct. 6. 

• “Someone in a gray Nissan Altima” reportedly “threw something over the fence” in the 300 block of Southwest 11th Street at 6:55 p.m. on Oct. 6. The item was determined to be a package. 

• Just after 5:05 p.m. on Oct. 7, a caller in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue said he “wants to sit down and talk about some people that are after him down in California” and said he “just wants to make officers aware that his life may be in jeopardy.” The officer handling the call noted the caller “sounds very paranoid.” 

• Just after 4:50 a.m. on Oct. 8, a resident in the 1900 block of Southeast Oakview Drive reported she “heard footsteps around the house” and asked officers to check the area. 

• Just after 5:50 p.m. on Oct. 8, a customer at a pet store in the 1400 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue reported “someone is selling animals in a bunch of cages” outside the store. Officers confirmed the animals had access to food and water and there was “nothing to indicate they are being taken care of ‘inhumanely.’” 

• Just before 6 p.m. on Oct. 8, a juvenile in the 100 block of Southwest 11th Street called to report “someone is in the house that doesn’t make her comfortable and she wants him to leave.” 

 

Identity theft 

• A case of identity theft was reported in the 1800 block of South Market Boulevard just after 10:45 a.m. on Oct. 6. 

 

Juvenile problems 



• A disorderly 17-year-old girl driving a gray Honda Accord was reportedly “being disrespectful (and) not listening,” in the 10 block of Southwest Chehalis Avenue at approximately 1:35 p.m. on Oct. 6. She reportedly left her car blocking the roadway. 

• At approximately 7:20 a.m. on Oct. 9, a caller in the 400 block of Northeast Washington Avenue called “to report her grandson (is) not going to school again.” The caller “advised it’s against the law for him to refuse school and it’s also elder abuse for her to have to deal with it.” Officers determined no crime had occurred and advised the caller of her options.  

 

Vehicle accident 

• A non-injury, two-vehicle collision was reported at the intersection of Northwest State Avenue and Northwest Chamber of Commerce Way just before 2:40 p.m. on Oct. 6. 

 

DUI 

• A subject was arrested in the 1700 block of North National Avenue just before 10:45 p.m. on Oct. 6 and was booked into the Lewis County Jail for DUI. 

 

Hit-and-run 

• A hit-and-run reported in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue just before 5:15 p.m. on Oct. 7 is under investigation. 

 

Assault 

• A male subject was cited for fourth-degree assault in the 100 block of Southwest Fifth Street just after 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 6. 

• At approximately 12 a.m. on Oct. 7, a caller reported a male subject “pulled a knife” on the caller in the 500 block of Northwest Pacific Avenue. The male left the scene before officers arrived. 

• A subject was cited for custodial assault in the 1200 block of Southwest Pacific Avenue at approximately 3:20 a.m. on Oct. 7. 

 

Harassment 

• Just after 9:55 p.m. on Oct. 6, a caller in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue reported he was receiving threats via Snapchat from an ex partner. 

• An employee at a store in the 600 block of Northwest Arkansas Way reported someone called the store and made a gun threat just after 7:45 p.m. on Oct. 8. The caller reportedly said “I’m going to blow your f-cking head off” and said “see you soon.” The employee said the caller “may have been a customer” upset that something was missing in a DoorDash order. 

 

Disputes 

• A verbal family dispute was reported in the 200 block of Southwest 15th Street at approximately 11:20 p.m. on Oct. 6. 

• A verbal dispute was reported in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue just before 3:10 p.m. on Oct. 8. 

• A possible physical dispute was reported in the 200 block of Southwest 13th Street at 3:35 a.m. on Oct. 9. 

 

Counterfeiting 

• Just after 12:25 p.m. on Oct. 7, a caller reported receiving a counterfeit $50 bill from an unidentified subject in the 100 block of Southwest Interstate Avenue. 

 

Vicious dog 

• Just after 4:10 p.m. on Oct. 7, a caller in the 1000 block of Northwest Maryland Avenue reported they were “working on vaccinations and her assistant was bit by one of the dogs,” a chihuahua, about 45 minutes prior. 

 

Burglary 

• Just before 7:20 p.m. on Oct. 6, a caller reported a woman was “trying to get into the neighbor’s truck” in the 300 block of Northwest Georgia Avenue. 

• A possible attempted burglary was reported in the 600 block of Southwest Chehalis Avenue just after 1:50 p.m. on Oct. 7. The reporting party said they found two of their screens unlatched and propped up against their window. 

• A first-degree burglary reported in the 2100 block of North National Avenue at 5:40 p.m. on Oct. 7 is under investigation. 

• At approximately 1:50 p.m. on Oct. 8, a caller reported “homeless people (were) trying to break into the tan house” in the 400 block of South Market Boulevard. 

 

Information requests 

• At 1:45 p.m. on Oct. 7, a caller in the 200 block of Northeast Washington Avenue reported they “just moved to town and had questions about gun laws and rules.” 

• Just after 6:40 p.m. on Oct. 7, a caller at Green Hill School in the 300 block of Southwest 11th Street reported he “wants to protest” and “wants to know where he can be legally.” 

 

Malicious mischief 

• At 3:15 a.m. on Oct. 8, a caller reported “someone shot out their front windows” in the 600 block of Northwest Pennsylvania Avenue. Another caller at the same address advised “they were just sitting and all of a sudden had broken windows.” 

 

Drug violation 

• At 12:20 p.m. on Oct. 8, a caller reported a “male on a bike” was “selling drugs” at the intersection of Southwest Seventh Street and Southwest McFadden Avenue. 

 

Criminal trespass 

• A case of trespassing reported in the 1100 block of South Market Boulevard at approximately 5:40 p.m. on Oct. 8 is under investigation. 

 

LEWIS COUNTY JAIL STATISTICS

As of Monday morning, the Lewis County Jail had a total system population of 149 inmates, including 136 in the general population and 13 in the Work Ethic and Restitution Center (WERC). Of general population inmates, 105 were reported male and 31 were reported female. Of the WERC inmates, 11 were reported male and two were reported female.
