Sirens: Man sentenced for child molestation; woman jailed for attack at healthcare facility; DUI arrest

Sentencings

• Mark W. Powell, 55, Centralia, was sentenced on Sept. 16 to 30 months in prison and 30 months of community custody as part of a drug offender sentencing alternative, to include evaluation and treatment for substance abuse and domestic violence. Prior to sentencing, Powell pleaded guilty to one count of protection order violation with two previous convictions.

• Nathan J. Hayes, 48, Toledo, was sentenced on Sept. 16 to 33 months in prison after making an Alford plea to two counts of felony harassment and one count each of second-degree criminal trespass and resisting arrest. For previous Chronicle coverage, visit https://tinyurl.com/rpx5akd5. 

• Scott A. Marcus, 44, Chehalis, was sentenced on Sept. 21 to 41 months in prison and 36 months of community custody after pleading guilty to two counts of second-degree child molestation. A third count was dropped. The court entered a 10-year no-contact order on behalf of the victim. As part of his community custody, Marcus must participate in sexual deviancy treatment and refrain from direct or indirect contact with minors. • Kenneth E. Allen, 33, Silver Creek, was sentenced on Sept. 21 to 43 months in prison and a period of community custody after pleading guilty to one count of failure to register as a sex offender. For previous Chronicle coverage, visit https://tinyurl.com/mpbss53f. 

CENTRALIA POLICE DEPARTMENT

Arrests

• Jessica A. Hartley, 31, Silverdale, was arrested in the 3500 block of Steelhammer Drive at about 7:41 p.m. Sept. 29 and booked into the Lewis County Jail for alleged third-degree assault and malicious mischief. Hartley is also being referred for a charge of interference with a health care facility. According to police, Hartley allegedly attacked medical personnel at the facility, destroyed property and disrupted services. At least one individual suffered an injury and was transported to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.

• Steven R. Luurs Jr., 46, Centralia, was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail for alleged second-degree robbery near the corner of Northup Street and South Gold Street at about 10:47 p.m. Sept. 29. Luurs is also being referred for charges of knowing possession of a controlled substance and use/delivery of drug paraphernalia. According to police, Luurs allegedly threatened and assaulted a victim and stole $100. Police reportedly found Luurs using the money to purchase items at a service station. Luurs allegedly confessed during an interview, and police took him into custody.

Accidents

• A two-vehicle collision with no injuries was reported in the 1600 block of South Gold Street at about 5:19 p.m. Sept. 28.

• Officers responded to a collision between a vehicle and a cyclist near the corner of H Street and West First Street at about 11:24 a.m. Sept. 29. Police said the cyclist sustained minor injuries and did not need medical attention.

• Officers responded to a two-vehicle collision with no injuries near the corner of North Tower Avenue and East Center Street at about 12:39 p.m. Sept. 29.

Assault

• Officers responded to a report of possible domestic violence assault between two juveniles in the 1400 block of Lewis Street at about 2:42 p.m. Sept. 28. The case is under investigation.

Child molestation

• Police received a report of child molestation in the 200 block of West Hanson Street at about 9:23 a.m. Sept. 28. The case is under investigation.

DUI

• Emma J. Baerny, 28, Chehalis, was arrested and booked into the Chehalis Tribal Jail for allegedly driving under the influence in the 1900 block of South Gold Street at about 9:42 p.m. Sept. 28 after an officer observed signs of alcohol impairment during a traffic stop.

Malicious mischief



• Officers responded to reported vandalism to vehicle tires in the 1000 block of Scammon Creek Road at about 11:23 a.m. Sept. 28. There was no suspect information at the time.

Missing child

• Officers responded to a local elementary school in the 800 block of Field Avenue at about 12:36 p.m. Sept. 28 to help find a missing child. Police said the child was found safe.

Nuisance violation

• A 65-year-old Winlock man was issued a criminal citation in the 200 block of East Cherry Street at about 3:28 p.m. Sept. 29 after allegedly drinking from a can of alcohol in public.

Protection order violation

• A possible protection order violation was reported in the 900 block of E Street at about 6:41 p.m. Sept. 28. The case is under investigation.

Public assist

• Officers responded to a report of a disorderly man screaming and yelling in the parking lot of a business in the 300 block of West Reynolds Avenue at about 10:22 p.m. Sept. 29. Staff had reported they were afraid to leave the business to go home due to the man’s behavior. Officers arrived and discovered the male was upset because he had dropped his oil cap into the engine of his vehicle and could not retrieve it. Officers helped the man retrieve the cap and “everyone safely went on with their night,” the department said.

Theft

• Police received a report of a package theft at a local business in the 1100 block of Harrison Avenue at about 2:12 p.m. Sept. 29. The case is under investigation.

CHEHALIS POLICE DEPARTMENT

Arrests and citations

• John Griffin, 61, was booked into the Lewis County Jail for alleged felony harassment and interfering with domestic violence reporting in the 400 block of Northeast Adams Avenue at about 12:59 p.m. Sept. 26.

• Blake A. Perkins, 27, was issued a criminal citation and booked into the Lewis County Jail for allegedly driving under the influence in the 1500 block of North National Avenue at about 1:55 a.m. Sept. 28.

• Jacob W. Daily, 48, was booked into the Lewis County Jail for alleged possession of a controlled substance in the 600 block of North National Avenue at about 4:07 p.m. Sept. 28.

• Nichole M. Rennie, 33, was issued a criminal citation for alleged possession of a controlled substance near the Exit 77 northbound Interstate 5 on-ramp at about 9:02 p.m. Sept. 28.

JAIL STATISTICS

• As of Sept. 30, the Lewis County Jail had a total facility population of 150 inmates, including 137 in the general population and 13 in the Work Ethic and Restitution Center (WERC). Of the general population inmates, 117 were reported male and 20 were reported female. Of the WERC inmates, 11 were reported male and two were reported female.

• As of Sept. 30, the Chehalis Tribal Jail had a total jail population of 12 inmates. Of those, one was from Centralia and five were from the Department of Corrections. Additionally, there were four from the Lummi Nation and one each from the Chehalis Tribal Court and the Tulalip Tribe.
