Sirens: Man 'blesses' passing cars; person 'tries to fight stop sign'; burglar refuses to leave crawl space

CENTRALIA POLICE DEPARTMENT

Disorderly conduct

• A disorderly subject was reported in the 1200 block of Mellen Street just after 8:10 a.m. on May 1. The subject left before officers arrived.

• A homeless Chehalis resident was warned for acting disorderly at a park in the 2000 block of Borst Avenue at approximately 2:45 p.m. on May 1.

• A 41-year-old Chehalis man was warned for “trying to fight a stop sign” in the 900 block of Harrison Avenue just before 6 p.m. on May 1.

• Two subjects were reportedly throwing garbage near a business in the 1100 block of Harrison Avenue just after 5 a.m. on May 2. They both reportedly “took off running” when an officer arrived.

• A homeless man  in the 1100 block of Harrison Avenue was reportedly “blessing cars as they drove past so the titanium parts would not rust” at 2:50 p.m. on May 2. He was warned to stay out of the road and not impede traffic.

• A disorderly man was reportedly yelling at employees at a business in the 1200 block of Lum Road at 5:40 p.m. on May 2. Officers de-escalated the situation.

 

Criminal trespass

• A homeless person was trespassed from a cemetery in the 1100 block of Caveness Drive just after 11:40 a.m. on May 1 for “causing a disturbance.”

• A man who was reportedly “pounding on the doors” of a business in the 200 block of West Main Street just after 9:40 a.m. on May 2 was trespassed from the business.

• Several homeless men were trespassed from a business in the 300 block of West Main Street just after 3:55 p.m. on May 2.

• A homeless person was trespassed from BNSF property in the 200 block of East Plum Street just after 5:15 p.m. on May 2.

 

Overdose

• Officers aided medical personnel in responding to a drug overdose at a motel in the 1000 block of Eckerson Road just after 11 a.m. on May 1. The subject regained consciousness after receiving two doses of Narcan. They reportedly admitted to using fentanyl.

 

Vehicle accidents

• A non-injury, two-vehicle collision was reported in the 200 block of North Tower Avenue at 11:55 a.m. on May 1.

• A non-injury, two-vehicle collision was reported in the 1300 block of South Gold Street at approximately 1:20 p.m. on May 1.

 

Hit-and-run

• A hit-and-run reported in a parking lot in the 1800 block of Cooks Hill Road just after 12:30 p.m. on May 2 is under investigation.

 

Malicious mischief

• Damage to a fence was reported in the 1700 block of Military Road at approximately 12:25 p.m. on May 1.

• A 43-year-old Centralia man was cited for third-degree malicious mischief, domestic violence for allegedly stabbing his father’s car tires with a knife in the 100 block of East Roanoke Street just after 3:10 a.m. on May 3. The man reportedly fled the scene before officers arrived. Officers were unable to locate him.

 

Eluding police

• An officer tried to conduct a traffic stop on a 35-year-old Centralia man for outstanding warrants and driving with a suspended license in the 1200 block of Alder Street at 6 p.m. on May 1. The man reportedly “drove recklessly to elude police instead of stopping.” Officers did not pursue to comply with current state pursuit laws, according to the Centralia Police Department.

 

Theft

• A male suspect reportedly stole over $169 worth of food and liquor from a grocery store in the 1100 block of Harrison Avenue just before 8:15 p.m. on May 1. He reportedly fled in an black Dodge pickup driven by another male. The case is under investigation.

 

Narcotics investigation

• A Centralia K-9 team responded to help Thurston County deputies with a narcotics investigation in the 100 block of West Maple Street just before 8:25 p.m. on May 1.

 

Dispute

• A physical dispute was reported outside a tavern in the 100 block of South Tower Avenue at 11:15 p.m. on May 1. The “intoxicated instigator” in the dispute reported that “a male hit him after he swung at the male,” according to the Centralia Police Department.

 

DUI

• A 32-year-old Chehalis man was arrested at the intersection of Salzer Valley Road and Centralia Alpha Road just after 3:10 a.m. on May 2 and was booked into the Lewis County Jail for DUI, driving with a suspended license and for an outstanding Lewis County District Court warrant.

 

Found person

  A homeless woman who was reported missing out of Olympia was located in the 200 block of South Tower Avenue at approximately 3:15 a.m. on May 2. An officer contacted a family member and gave them the woman’s location.

 

Burglary

• Centralia officers helped Lewis County Sheriff’s Office deputies in responding to a burglary in the 100 block of Blackhawk Lane just after 10:35 a.m. on May 2. The suspect reportedly “hid in the crawl space of the residence and refused to come out,” according to the Centralia Police Department. The case is being handled by the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

• A robbery panic alarm was activated at a business in the 400 block of South Tower Avenue just after 11:20 a.m. on May 2. Officers confirmed the alarm was accidentally activated.

• A possible burglary reported at a business in the 100 block of Downing Road just before 4:20 a.m. on May 3 is under investigation.

 

Assault

• Cedric Howlitz, 27, of Centralia, was arrested in the 1800 block of Shamrock Drive just after noon on May 2 and was booked into the Lewis County Jail for second-degree assault, domestic violence and harassment threat to kill, domestic violence. He had a preliminary hearing scheduled in Lewis County Superior Court at 4 p.m. on May 3.

• Griffin Russell, 31, of Chehalis, was arrested in the 3000 block of Borst Avenue just after 2 a.m. on May 3 and was booked into the Lewis County Jail for second-degree assault, domestic violence. He had a preliminary hearing scheduled in Lewis County Superior Court at 4 p.m. on May 3.



 

Welfare check

• Just after 3:30 p.m. on May 2, an employer asked officers to check on an employee in the 1500 block of Lewis Street who did not show up for work and was not answering the phone. Officers confirmed the employee was safe at home.

 

Open container

• A homeless person was cited for having/drinking beer in public in the 300 block of West Main Street at 4:05 p.m. on May 2.

 

Sexual misconduct

• Just after 6:20 p.m. on May 2, officers responded to a report of a sexual assault that occurred in the 1100 block of Scammon Creek Road the previous week. The case was referred to the Lewis County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

 

Mental health response

• Officers aided Child Protective Services in responding to a report of a girl having a manic episode at the intersection of North Pearl and East Carson streets just before 9:15 p.m. on May 2. The girl was reportedly “running down the street and asking for an ambulance.” She was transported to a local facility “to get help.”

• Officers responded to a report of a “male in crisis” in the 200 block of South Tower Avenue just after 11:30 p.m. on May 2. The man was reportedly “seeing ghosts in the bathroom and people hiding under his table” and had armed himself with a baseball bat. “Officers were able to de-escalate the male and the crisis team came out to work with (him),” according to the Centralia Police Department.

 

CHEHALIS POLICE DEPARTMENT

Criminal trespass

• A mobile home and a passenger vehicle were reportedly parked on a property in the 1400 block of Southwest William Avenue just before 10:30 a.m. on May 1.

• Just after 1:25 p.m. on May 1, a citizen reported a homeless camp had been set up in the 200 block of Southeast Adams Avenue.

• A “disorderly tweaking male” who was “flipping people off” and “taking off his clothes” outside a business in the 600 block of Northwest Arkansas Way just before 5:20 p.m. on May 1 was trespassed from the business.

 

Suspicious circumstances

• A man was reportedly unloading items from a vehicle onto the side of the road in the 1500 block of Southwest Pacific Avenue just before 11;35 a.m. on May 1.

• A citizen reported two adults were threatening a child in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue just after 7:25 p.m. on May 1. The reporting party stated “the father threatened to hit the child when she wouldn’t put her seatbelt on” but the father “did not hit the child.” The dispatcher “advised it sounds like he was parenting his child.”

• A citizen reported someone walked up to them and “threatened to fight (them)” in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue at 9:45 p.m. on May 1.

• A woman was reportedly trying to break into an office in the 300 block of Southwest Third Street just after 12:30 a.m. on May 1. The reporting party said they thought the woman was trying to get money orders since rent is due today.” Officers found no signs of entry to the office.

• Two subjects were reportedly “refusing to ID themselves” at a site in the 1200 block of Bishop Road at 8:45 a.m. on May 2. The reporting party advised there was an “ongoing issue with the subjects coming on site and refusing to ID themselves,” saying they “keep coming in to use the restroom and then leaving.” The reporting party advised dispatchers that he was following the subjects on northbound Interstate 5.

Theft

• Lewis County Parks and Recreation reported a subject was possibly stealing power from the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds in the 2500 block of North National Avenue just after 12:35 p.m. on May 1.

• A citizen reported he dropped his wallet at a hotel in the 700 block of Northwest Liberty Place at approximately 8:45 p.m. on May 1 and said someone else picked it up. The wallet was recovered and returned.

• A vehicle prowl reported in the 700 block of Northwest Liberty Place at approximately 7:30 a.m. on May 2 is under investigation.

• A possible vehicle theft was reported in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue at approximately 9:40 a.m. on May 2. The reporting party later advised that they found the vehicle, reporting “they forgot where they parked it.”

• A purse containing a cellphone was reported stolen from a vehicle in the 1600 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue just after 3:25 p.m. on May 2. The purse was located about 20 minutes later.

 

Juvenile problems 

• A 15-year-old boy was arrested in the 300 block of Southeast Park Hill Drive just before 2:35 p.m. on May 1 and was booked into the Lewis County Juvenile Detention Center for allegedly threatening to stab his step-parent while holding a pen.

• A student was reportedly causing an “unknown problem” in the 100 block of Northeast Hampe Way just before 10:35 a.m. on May 2.

 

Assault

• A custodial assault that occurred about a week prior was reported at Green Hill School in the 300 block of 11th Street just after 9:50 a.m. on May 2.

 

Vehicle accident

• A non-injury, two-vehicle collision was reported at the Interstate 5 Exit 79 onramp just before 3:30 p.m. on May 2.

 

Disorderly conduct

• A woman was reportedly “yelling at no one” and “having a psychotic episode” in the 1400 block of Northwest Louisiana Avenue just after 4:25 p.m. on May 2.

 

FIRE AND EMS CALLS

• Between Wednesday morning and Friday morning, Lewis County 911 Communications logged approximately 43 illness-related calls, nine injury-related calls, 10  fire-related calls, five non-emergency service calls, three vehicle accidents, one Lifeline medical alert, one overdose, one hazardous conditions report and one other call.

 

JAIL STATISTICS

• As of Friday morning, the Lewis County Jail had a total system population of 131 inmates, including 118 in the general population and 13 in the Work Ethic and Restitution Center (WERC). Of general population inmates, 100 were reported male and 18 were reported female. Of the WERC inmates, 11 were reported male and two were reported female.

• As of Friday morning, the Chehalis Tribal Jail had a total system population of nine inmates, including five booked by the Centralia Police Department, three booked by the state Department of Corrections and one booked by the Lummi Nation.
