Sirens: Centralian loses $81K to fraud; juvenile spits on officers; arrests for eluding, hit-and-run, drugs and more; men caught chasing bad checks

LEWIS COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT

Arraignments

• Craig A. Haselton, 36, Centralia, pleaded not guilty on May 28 to one count each of first-degree malicious mischief, hit-and-run and first-degree negligent driving. According to court documents, Haselton is accused of cutting down a power pole after hitting it with his vehicle. A trial is pending.

• Arihana J. Wallace, 24, Battle Ground, pleaded not guilty on May 28 to one count each of attempting to elude a police vehicle, driving while under the influence and reckless driving. A trial is pending.

• Brandon M. Foster, 34, Centralia, pleaded not guilty on May 28 to one count each of felony physical control of a vehicle while under the influence, first-degree driving with a suspended or revoked license and ignition interlock violation. A trial is pending.

• Louie J. Muller, 45, Pe Ell, pleaded not guilty on May 28 to one count of first-degree unlawful firearm possession. A trial is pending.

Preliminary appearances

• David W. Normand, 33, Centralia, made a preliminary appearance May 26 for two counts of felony harassment after allegedly approaching police officers with a hatchet as they were arresting Normand’s girlfriend. According to court documents, Normand dropped the hatchet after officers drew their guns, but then allegedly made threats to the officers. A judge set bail at $5,000 cash or bond.

CENTRALIA POLICE DEPARTMENT

Arrests

• Steven Singh, 38, Tacoma, and Bobby L. Hampton, 44, Seattle, were arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail for two counts of alleged first-degree theft in the 1100 block of Harrison Avenue at about 3:03 p.m. May 27. According to police, Singh and Hampton were allegedly caught trying to cash fraudulent checks at a local credit union. During the investigation, police determined they had cashed other fraudulent checks at another credit union earlier in the day.

• Damien C. Baughman, 32, Curtiz, was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail for alleged possession of a stolen vehicle and an outstanding warrant in the 1000 block of Eckerson Road at about 11:04 p.m. May 27. Police reportedly contacted Baughman on a motorcycle with a VIN number that did not match the license plate. Police said the ignition had been tampered with. Police determined the motorcycle was stolen. Baughman was referred for other alleged charges, including: driving on a suspended license, no ignition interlock device, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and use of drug paraphernalia.

• Luis S. Alvarez-Price, 25, Centralia, was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail for alleged third-degree malicious mischief (domestic violence) in the 1300 block of Belmont Avenue at about 12:06 a.m. May 28.

• Jerimy J. Trudeau, 43, Centralia, was arrested in the 1300 block of Harrison Avenue at about noon May 28 after allegedly violating an anti-harassment order prohibiting him from coming within 1000 feet of a residence.

Accidents

• Officers responded to a two-vehicle collision in the 1500 block of Johnson Road at about 2:25 p.m. May 28.

Assault

• A juvenile was arrested after allegedly spitting on two officers and damaging a police vehicle in the 900 block of South Tower Avenue at about 11:21 p.m. May 27.

Criminal trespass

• Shila K. Brennan, 35, Centralia, was arrested and booked into the Chehalis Tribal Jail for a Centralia Municipal Court warrant and alleged second-degree criminal trespass in the 200 block of East Chestnut Street at about 7:03 p.m. May 27.

DUI



• Hunter J. Brown, 21, Centralia, was arrested and booked into the Lewis County Jail for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol in the 1200 block of Harrison Avenue at about 12:32 a.m. May 28.

Fraud

• A Centralia citizen was reportedly scammed out of $81,000 after someone contacted the citizen claiming their bank account had been compromised. Police identified the account where the funds had been deposited and obtained a search warrant to seize the account and freeze all funds. The investigation is ongoing. The fraud was reported in the 1400 block of Stillwaters Avenue at about 8:29 a.m. May 28.

Hit-and-run

• A hit-and-run collision was reported in the 1300 block of South Gold Street at about 5:13 p.m. May 27. There was no suspect information at the time.

Theft

• Vehicle tabs were reported stolen off a vehicle in the 800 block of North Tower Avenue at about 9:45 a.m. May 27. The tabs were reportedly stolen sometime within the last four months.

• Alcohol was reported stolen from a local grocery store in the 1100 block of Harrison Avenue at about 10:47 a.m. May 27.

• A purse was reported stolen in the 800 block of Harrison Avenue at about 8:12 a.m. May 28 after it was accidentally left at a business.

• Officers investigated the theft of rental property in the 1400 block of South Gold Street at about 10:35 a.m. May 28.

• Officers investigated the theft of rental property in the 1400 block of South Gold Street at about 12:43 p.m. May 28.

CHEHALIS POLICE DEPARTMENT

JAIL STATISTICS

• As of May 29, the Lewis County Jail had a total facility population of 142 inmates, including 128 in the general population and 14 in the Work Ethic and Restitution Center (WERC). Of the general population inmates, 105 were reported male and 23 were reported female. Of the WERC inmates, 12 were reported male and two were reported female.

• As of May 29, the Chehalis Tribal Jail had a total jail population of 17 inmates. Of those, five were from Centralia, one was from Chehalis and seven were from the Department of Corrections. Additionally, there were two from the Skokomish Tribe and one each from the Quileute Nation and the Shoalwater Bay Tribe.
