A 53-year-old man suspected of attempted murder and unlawful possession of a firearm died due to a self-inflicted gunshot in the Randle area on Wednesday morning, according to a news release from the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives continue to investigate the death of the man, who was not identified in the news release.

According to the sheriff’s office, detectives with the Kent Police Department had developed probable cause to arrest the man.

At about 12:30 p.m., law enforcement officials from Kent and Lewis County contacted the man in the 800 block of Falls Road in Randle. As law enforcement officials approached the vehicle, which was occupied by the suspect and a passenger, the suspect sustained “what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” according to the sheriff’s office.

“Life-saving measures were taken; however, the suspect was later pronounced deceased at the scene,” according to the sheriff’s office. “On-scene law enforcement did not discharge their firearms during the incident.”

The case remains active and no additional details were released.

An autopsy has been scheduled. The man's identity and cause and manner of death will be released by the Lewis County Coroner’s Office “when appropriate,” according to the sheriff’s office.
