A Clark County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot and killed a man in Vancouver on Wednesday night, officials said.
The shooting happened around 10:50 p.m. near Main Street & East 19th Street in downtown Vancouver, the Clark County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Officials haven’t publicly identified the man who died or the deputy who shot him.
Deputies received a call around 10:41 p.m. from a home near East 27th Street and H Street. The caller said their son had been drinking and was high on meth. The caller added that the son had broken the front door of the caller’s house and “was armed and was going to kill the two of them,” officials said.
The suspect left the house on a bike before deputies arrived, but a Vancouver police officer spotted him riding on Columbia Street.
Seconds later, a sheriff’s deputy radioed that he “still has a gun on him,” according to the sheriff’s office statement.
Deputies found the suspect a few minutes later, and one officer fatally shot him during the resulting confrontation, officials said.
Citing the ongoing investigation, officials provided no details of the shooting, other than to say that nobody else was injured during the incident.
The sheriff’s office put the deputy who shot the man on critical incident leave, which is standard procedure, while the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations looks into the shooting.
The incident is the latest in a series of deadly police shootings in Vancouver, including a man who was shot in the head by Vancouver police in December and an armed carjacker who was shot by sheriff’s deputies while fleeing into an American Legion building in March.
