Several popular Oregon state parks, campgrounds shut down due to major storm damage

Several popular state parks in Oregon are closed to the public due to widespread storm damage that has closed highways and left thousands without power across western Oregon.

Silver Falls, Ecola and Detroit Lake state parks are among Wednesday’s closures, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department said, shuttered by fallen trees and landslides that have damaged park roads and infrastructure. Sarah Helmick and Maud Williams state recreation sites were also shut down Wednesday morning, though Maud Williams reopened in the afternoon.

The closures have resulted in canceled camping reservations and trail closures, as crews work to assess and clean up damage, park officials said. With more storms in the forecast, Oregon state parks may continue to be impacted by weather. The parks department is posting updates online at stateparks.oregon.gov.

Some parks that remain open have experienced significant damage. Downed trees and power outages have affected L.L. Stub Stewart, Champoeg and Devils Punchbowl state parks, as well as several parks in the Columbia River Gorge, park officials said. Fallen trees have also damaged a picnic shelter at Milo McIver State Park and blocked a boat launch at Molalla River State Park.

“We are keeping the park pages updated on our website and encourage people to check online before they head out,” Jo Niehaus, senior policy advisor for the parks department, said in an email. “Current reservation holders should check before arrival to make sure the park is open and accessible.”

“We appreciate everyone staying out of closed areas as we assess the safety and damages.”

Here are the current Oregon state park closures, as of Wednesday afternoon:

Ecola State Park: Closed until further notice after a landslide on Ecola Park Road saw “significant movement” over the weekend. Continued weather and forecasted rainfall may lead to more slides. There is no timeline for reopening.

Detroit Lake State Park: Closed due to downed trees across the highway and in the park, as well as a damaged restroom. Assessments are underway and there is no timeline for reopening. Reservation holders are encouraged to call and cancel their reservations.

Silver Falls State Park: Closed due to numerous downed trees across Oregon 214. Damage assessments are underway.

Sarah Helmick State Recreation Site: Closed due to downed trees.
