Timely hits and getting on base is all the Beavers needed to string together seven runs in the top of the fourth to beat the Class 4A Tornados 8-3 on Friday night on the road.
Third place a year ago in 1A, Tenino (1-0) got on base behind three singles, two hit by pitches and a couple walks in the inning to turn a scoreless battle through three complete innings into a rout. Still, head coach Ryan Schlesser noticed some fixable things.
“It was very blatantly obvious it was game one,” he said. “Sloppy on the basepaths, fielding things need to get figured out. Good at-bats that were in deep counts.”
Austin Gonia drove in two runs and Will Feltus ripped a double, contributing two of the five hits the Beavers had. Gonia, Jack Burkhardt and Zeke Haskins combined for the shutout. Tenino will play Charles Wright Academy on Monday in another non-league tilt.
