Serial killer linked to cold case murder of elderly widow in Oregon home

Washington County law enforcement authorities said Tuesday they’ve linked notorious serial killer Cesar Barone to the 1992 killing of an 82-year-old Hillsboro woman.

The district attorney’s office said investigators assigned to a cold case unit linked Barone to the death of Elizabeth Wasson, a widow who was found dead in her home on Sept. 23, 1992.

In 1995, Barone was convicted of murdering four women and sentenced to death. He also sexually assaulted and strangled three other women who survived the attacks.

He was long linked to Wasson’s killing. Investigators say they have now tied Barone to the case through DNA analysis.

Barone died in prison in 2009.

“For years, this family lived without answers,” Hillsboro Police Department Detective Megan Townsend said. “Today we’re finally able to give them the truth they deserved from the beginning.”
