Senior Legion: Sobe-Toyota Wins Three At Red Devil Classic

Posted

LONGVIEW — Sobe-Toyota reached the championship game of the Red Devil Classic before falling to the NW Futures 4-1 here on Monday. The Lewis County-based squad won three straight games en route to the chipper and got some solid pitching from unconventional places.

NW Futures 4, Sobe-Toyota 1

Sobe-Toyota was limited to three hits and — despite holding NW Futures to six scoreless innings — would end up falling in the Red Devil Classic championship game at Story Field in Longview on Monday. Max Dulin and Hayden Dobyns combined to go the distance, but a 4-run inning by NW Futures proved to be too much.

John Sharkey scored Sobe-Toyota’s lone run in the second inning, notching a single and coming around to score after NW Futures threw the ball away. Alex Cox also had a single and Spencer Burdick had a triple.

“Pitching and defense was pretty good,” Sobe-Toyota coach Jake LeDuc said. “Our whole goal this weekend was to try and split up playing time and get people at bats. We wanted to come out of this tournament healthy and we accomplished that. We also got to go to the championship game, so it was a good, scrappy weekend for us.”

Sobe-Toyota 10, Renegades 1

What had become as a close pitchers’ dual turned into a route as Sobe-Toyota exploded for 9 runs in the seventh inning against Port Orchard’s Renegades squad en route to a 10-1 Red Devil Classic semifinals’ victory Monday at Story Field in Longview.

Both teams had been knotted up at 1-1 when in the seventh inning, the Lewis County squad got and RBI triple by Spencer Burdick, some bases loaded walks, an Elijah Johnson RBI single and a 2-run single by Burdick again.

“Offensively we kind of went off in that inning,” LeDuc said. “That’s been us all season. We’ve been a bit of a slow starter at the plate, but I really have to tip my cap to our pitching in this game. Max Dulin and Hayden Dobyns really pitched well for us today.”

Both are usually position players for Sobe-Toyota but combined with Jacob Cleary to allow just five hits and one run in the fifth innings. Catcher Brandon Davis also had two hits and 2 RBI at the plate.

Sobe-Toyota 4, Sandburg 1

Sobe-Toyota scored 3 runs in the top of the seventh to get past Sandburg 4-1 in the final day of pool play at the Red Devil Classic in Longview on Sunday. Gavin Kerner went to 2 for 2 as the Lewis County squad got more solid pitching by several different players.

Riley Christensen, Jacob Cleary and Nolan Wasson combined to hold Sandburg to just three hits and a run in the sixth inning. Meanwhile Sobe-Toyota got a double from Elijah Johnson and RBI singles by John Sharkey and Michael Rose.

Sobe-Toyota 7, Showtime 6

Sobe-Toyota survived a late barrage by Showtime to win their pool play matchup 7-6 in Longview on Saturday. A majority of the Lewis County squads’ runs can via a 6-run rally in the top of the third.

“Eight guys reached base in that inning,” LeDuc said.

Gavin Kerner and Elijah Johnson both drove in runs during the big inning, while JC Cleary added a 2-run single.

Meanwhile on the mound, Zeb Chamberlain went three innings, allowing just 1 run before Showtime was finally able to get some work done, scoring 3 runs in the fourth and another 2 runs in the fifth. They finished with 11 hits, while Sobe-Toyota made the most out of their six hits.
