Second quarter margin dooms Adna against 2A contender R.A. Long

Leading by four after one quarter and at one point tied at 14 against a returning state trophy team, the Pirates never got back on track before time ran out in losing to the Lumberjacks 57-43 in the final game of the Adna Holiday Hoops Tournament.

It’s the second straight setback to a Class 2A opponent, yet Adna head coach Luke Salme isn’t sulking.

“I don’t remember ever being this fired up after losing two games in a holiday tournament,” Salme said. “I think they are ready to roll.”

R.A. Long closed the second period on a 16-2 spree that featured leading scorer Jeff Rooklidge responsible for 10 points. It kept the foot on the gas in the third, outscoring the Pirates 18-9 to put the game out of reach.

Adna (7-2) attempted a late push, but time was not on its side. Grayson Humphrey led the scoring with 17 points and Landen Cline added 11 in his varsity debut with the Pirates. Trevin Salme was held to seven points.

The Pirates get back into C2BL action on Friday versus Mossyrock. It’ll be their last home game in three weeks with five straight league road contests.

“We’re a helluva lot better than we were three days ago,” Coach Salme said.
