A 63-year-old man missing since July 1 was found dead Thursday at the bottom of a 300-foot cliff in forestland southeast of Salem, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office said.

Linn County Search and Rescue located the body of David Winter, 63, of Albany, in the Snow Peak area on Bureau of Land Management land. Searchers needed to use a rope system to retrieve Winter’s body.

The sheriff’s office said no foul play was suspected but did not release any other details about cause or manner of death.

Winter had been missing since July 1, and last week sheriff’s deputies found his car abandoned near Snow Peak, after a passerby reported it. The car was on a secluded logging road.

A large search effort got underway, involving Linn County Search and Rescue, Lane County Search and Rescue, Albany Police Department, Mary’s Peak Search and Rescue, Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Corvallis Mountain Rescue, Marion County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, Region 3 K9 Search Dogs and the Oregon Army National Guard.

Winter was found on the third day.
