A school bus containing 15 teenagers struck the center median on Interstate 5 just south of Toledo Friday night after the driver of a Ford Mustang lost control and collided with the bus, according to a memo from the Washington State Patrol.
Both vehicles were traveling north in the same lane on I-5 minutes before midnight when the Mustang “attempted to pass another vehicle” in the adjacent lane and “lost control,” according to the state patrol.
The Mustang struck the bus as a result. Both vehicles hit the median around Exit 57.
The driver of the Mustang, Alan R. Gutierrez-Villanueva, 22, of Winlock, was transported to Providence Centralia Hospital for undisclosed injuries. No drugs or alcohol were reportedly involved in the collision, though the incident is under investigation.
The driver of the school bus, Kayla J. Fitzsimmons, 54, Monroe, was also transported to Providence Centralia Hospital for undisclosed injuries, as were Terry N. Perrone, 49, of Austin, Texas, and a 15-year-old male teen from Snohomish, both passengers.
The cause of the incident was listed by the state patrol as “speeds too fast for conditions.”
The Mustang was considered totaled. The bus received reportable damage.
