Schmidt House in Tumwater to celebrate America250, discuss Declaration of Independence

History talks continue at the Schmidt House in Tumwater, with May’s talk scheduled for noon on May 7. The talk kicks off a month-long exhibit celebrating America250.

On May 14 to 16, 21 to 23 and 28 to 30, the Schmidt House will feature America250-themed exhibits presented by several Thurston County heritage organizations. Displays include stamps, quilts, kitchen tools, fire department history, bald eagle information and more. The house will be open from noon to 6 p.m. on each of its open days.

Featured displays and community partners include:

• Old-fashioned kitchen tools — Daughters of the American Revolution

• Patriotic stamps and postal envelopes — Olympia Philatelic Society

• Quilts through the ages — Tumwater Historical Association

• Genealogy resources — Olympia Genealogical Society

• Flags and patriotic history — Sons of the American Revolution

• Bald eagle ecology and USS Constitution — Olympia Tumwater Foundation



• Fire department history — Firehouse 5

On May 16 and May 24, the American Legion Band will give free concerts on the front lawn. Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket and enjoy live patriotic music in a scenic, historic setting.

May’s history talk is titled “The Greatest Breakup Letter in History: The Declaration of Independence.”

Presented by Art Dolan of the Sons of the American Revolution, the fast-paced program will summarize the events leading up to the Declaration of Independence as well as quotes from the forgotten founding father who inspired the declaration.

Dolan is a retired science teacher who has lived in Olympia since 2005. His involvement with Sons of the American Revolution began when he discovered that one of his ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Seating will be first-come, first-served until room capacity is reached.

The Schmidt House is located at 330 Schmidt Place SW, Tumwater.
