The Toledo boys basketball team came away with a non-league win to open its season Tuesday, jumping two rungs up the classification ladder and beating Rochester 65-52 at home.

The Riverhawks (1-0) trailed 16-14 after a quarter of play, but dropped 20 points in both the second and third quarters to roar ahead.

Kaven Winters, who was held without a basket in the opening quarter, finished with 18 points to lead all scorers, and also led Toledo with 11 rebounds.

“Great game for him,” Toledo coach Grady Fallon said.

Rogan Stanley added 14 points — 12 of which came in the second half — and had 10 boards for a double-double of his own.

Cooper Fallon led the hosts in the first half with eight points and finished with 10 for the night, and Trevin Gale added 11.

“We didn’t shoot great, but we got some good looks, executed some plays,” Grady Fallon said.

Ethan Rodriguez led the Warriors (0-1) with 10 points, and Carson Rotter had nine.

Toledo will embark on a road trip this weekend, beginning with a Friday game at Friday Harbor and continuing at Coupeville on Saturday. Rochester will face Tenino at home on Friday.
