The Toledo boys basketball team had its chances on Thursday against Wahkiakum, but the Riverhawks couldn’t hold on to a late lead and fell to the Mules in overtime 53-52.

After a back-and-forth game, the Riverhawks led by as much as nine in the fourth quarter and seven in OT, including by four with just 11 seconds left.

After a Wahkiakum bucket trimmed the deficit to two, the Riverhawks turned the ball over on the ensuing inbound, which led to a game-winning 3-pointer from Kyler Sause.

Sauce finished with a game-high 26 points, while Kaven Winters led the Riverhawks (9-3, 4-3 C2BL) with 21 and also dished out seven assists.

Cooper Fallon recorded a double-double with 14 rebounds and 11 points while also blocking three shots, while Rogan Stanley added 10 points and hauled in six rebounds.

The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for the Riverhawks, whose last loss prior to Thursday had come back on Dec. 19, when they were also defeated by a late 3-pointer by Toutle Lake’s Zach Swanson.

Toledo won’t have to wait long for the opportunity to bounce back, as the Riverhawks will head out to Morton on Friday.
