Richard Stride: Hispanic Heritage Month reminds us of the wonder that is America

Posted

Hispanic Heritage month is Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.

During this time, we celebrate histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors come from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and South America.

We began observing Hispanic Heritage week in 1968 under President Lyndon B. Johnson.  Hispanic Heritage Week was expanded in 1988 by President Ronald Regan to cover an entire 30 days.

Sept. 15 is of significance because it is the anniversary of independence for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile also celebrate their independence during September.

The month reminds us that our national identity is diverse, dynamic and always changing.  Since our beginning, we have been enriched and strengthened by Hispanic culture.

In Lewis County, 11.7% of the population is of Hispanic heritage out of a total population of 82,152 residents.

From the Presidency Project 2023 proclamation, "Hispanic heritage holds an indelible place in the heart and soul of our nation, and National Hispanic Heritage Month reminds us that the American identity is a fabric of diverse traditions and stories woven together. Since the beginning, our country has drawn strength and insights from Hispanic writers, scientists, soldiers, doctors, entrepreneurs, academics and leaders in labor and government. Our culture has been enriched by the rhythms, art, literature and creativity of Hispanic peoples. And our deepest values have been informed by the love of family and faith that is at the core of so many Hispanic communities. All of these contributions help us realize the promise of America for all Americans.”

At the Smithsonian Museum National Museum of American History exhibition, the theme is "Many Voices, One Nation." The museum invites visitors to "discover how diverse peoples built a nation together.”

Ultimately, we are a nation of various peoples, traditions, histories, cultures, race, and ethnicities.

Hispanic Heritage Month reminds us of the wonder that is America.

No matter who you are, what race or ethnicity you come from, you are welcome here. You are welcome here because we are the "land of the free."

America's heterogeneity has kept us strong and relevant.
