Residents with ripped clothes or broken appliances should think twice before they toss them, as the Repair and Sustainability Fair is on tap for Saturday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Community Events Building of the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds.
The free event takes place during the Community Garage Sale and is set up prior to the garage sale’s admission gate, a news release from event organizers stated.
Volunteer “fixers” will try their best to repair items or diagnose why they aren’t working so attendees can find the correct parts to try to mend it themselves.
Lewis County Solid Waste Utility and Lewis County WSU Master Recycler Composter Volunteers have brought together residents who are handy at a variety of crafts to repair clothing, furniture, electronics, bicycles and jewelry, and sharpen garden tools, scissors and knives.
Because of the popularity of some of the repairs, organizers ask that each participant initially bring only two items for repair. As “fix it” staff become available, participants may be able to have additional items repaired.
A document shredding truck will be on site from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Community Events Building parking lot. Residents can bring up to five bags or boxes of documents they would like shredded for free. The shredded paper will be hauled to a paper recycling facility after the event.
The repair event will host information booths on how to live a more sustainable life and a “stuff swap” table for people to donate gently used items that others might need.
The event is funded in part by a Local Solid Waste Financial Assistance Grant from the Washington Department of Ecology. For more information on this event and other upcoming events, visit www.lewiscountywa.gov/recycle.
