State Rep. Peter Abbarno, R-Centralia, was elected as one of two assistant floor leaders by his Republican colleagues during a meeting in Spokane on Thursday.

He will be serving in the position alongside his colleague Rep. Chris Corry, R-Yakima.

"I am very honored to have the trust of my House Republican colleagues to join our leadership team as an assistant floor leader," Abbarno said in a statement. "I look forward to working on our caucus' successful floor strategy and communication."

In his new role as an assistant floor leader, Abbarno will help organize and manage debate on the House floor, develop legislative strategy and policy, and assist caucus leadership in negotiations with Democrats.

This is Abbarno’s first time serving in House Republican Caucus leadership. He will begin his second term in the state House on Monday, Jan. 9. He was unopposed in the Nov. 8 general election.
