The Rainier’s boys basketball team got back in the win column on Friday, rebounding with an emphatic 71-27 victory over Winlock.

The Mountaineer (8-3, 5-2 C2BL) offense started off hot, scoring 19 points in the first and 26 in the second to build a 45-12 halftime lead. They added another 19 in the third before letting off in the fourth.

Eight different Mountaineers got on the scoresheet, and four finished in double figures, led by Peyton Sheaffer’s 15.

“It was nice to get everyone involved this evening,” Rainier coach Ben Sheaffer said. “We got out in transition and made the right play. Our activity on defense created some nice opportunities for us, and we shot the ball better than we have in some time.”

Johnny Boesch added 13 points of his own, while Jake Meldrum tallied 12 and Hunter Howell logged 10.

Freddy Patching led the Cardinals (1-10, 0-8 C2BL) with 11, while Arean Thapa added five.

Winlock’s next test isn’t any easier, as the Cardinals will head to Napavine on Saturday, while the Mountaineers will return home to host Morton-White Pass on Saturday.
