Rainier back in state tournament, knocks off Friday Harbor in crossover

The Rainier High School football team is headed to the state tournament for the first time since 2019 as the Mountaineers defeated Friday Harbor 52-38 in Oak Harbor Saturday.

Rainier started the year winless after four games but has since won five of its last six to advance to state. Senior running back Dorien Cano led the Mountaineers with four rushing touchdowns.

“It’s awesome. We talked last week after the win [against Centralia) about getting the guys up front and exploiting that strength we have,” Bartell said. “Defensively, we were able to neutralize a little bit of what they were doing early. Playing six in coverage was key there for us on defense.”

The Mountaineers (5-5) will look for their first win in the state tournament since 1992. The 2B state bracket will be released on Sunday.
