Providence Centralia Hospital welcomed two new general surgeons — Drs. Jonathan Gifford and Sam Paros — in late July 2025.
The two physicians have, over the last six months, helped expand the array of surgical procedures offered at the 128-bed, critical access hospital, including various minimally invasive approaches, according to a news release from Providence Centralia.
With their addition, the general surgery team now includes four general surgeons and two physician assistants.
Before coming to Providence Centralia, Gifford practiced for 14 years at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen. Although his parents are from Washington state, Gifford was born in Nevada and now lives in Olympia with his wife and kids.
Gifford specializes in minimally invasive and endoscopic surgeries. Following his undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University, Gifford attended medical school at the University of Nevada School of Medicine. He then completed general surgery residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he gained vast experience in minimally invasive surgeries, endoscopy and trauma. His broad practice also includes laparoscopic breast, colon and hernia surgery.
Gifford approaches patient care as personalized care for every patient, helping them understand their condition and possible treatments, including non-surgical and surgical options, according to the news release.
Paros is a Southwest Washington native who grew up in Rochester, where his dad was a veterinarian. He is a trained general surgeon with a specific interest in the surgical needs of rural populations. He went through the Running Start program at Centralia High School, then completed his undergraduate work at Centralia College and Washington State University. Since his wife worked for Boeing in South Carolina at the time, Paros attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina, and he subsequently completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, with a focus in rural surgical care.
He has performed a wide variety of surgeries in both large urban healthcare centers and small-town community access hospitals. Paros, a resident of Adna with his wife and three children, believes that the residents of Lewis County and beyond deserve the option of receiving quality care close to home and considers it a privilege to serve the community he grew up in, according to the release.
