Professor Nancy Koppelman will provide a presentation titled “The Oldest Hatred: Coming to Terms with Antisemitism” at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 30, at the Vernetta Smith Chehalis Timberland Library.

The event is sponsored by Humanities Washington.

According to a news release, in 2021, 82 percent of American Jews said antisemitism had risen over the last five years, while only 44 percent of the general public believed that to be the case.

The presentation will seek to explain the striking difference, according to a news release.

Antisemitism is sometimes called “the oldest hatred.” The presentation will outline “how religious and racial prejudice shaped Jewish experience over millennia and came to unite diverse Jewish people around the world,” according to the news release.

Topics will include the origins of Jewish stereotypes, how antisemitism intersects with white nationalism and the difference between critiques of the Israeli government and discrimination against Jews.

“Attendees will gain new knowledge and understanding about antisemitism along with strategies to address it,” according to a release.

There is no cost to attend. The library is located at 400 N Market Blvd., Chehalis.
