A 1947 Globe Swift airplane failed to make takeoff Thursday afternoon at the South Lewis County Airport in Toledo and instead crashed into the property’s tree line.
The small plane was thwarted by a strong crosswind that “forced the aircraft off the runway,” stated the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office in a Facebook post roughly two hours after the incident.
“At approximately 12:57 p.m. today, Lewis County deputies were advised of an airplane crash at the Toledo Airport,” the sheriff’s office stated. “Deputies arrived at 1:04 p.m. and found the plane intact.”
The pilot was reportedly uninjured. The all-metal plane suffered “minor damage.”
According to the sheriff’s office, the National Transportation Safety Board was notified of the incident and will conduct an independent investigation.
The plane — left mostly intact following the crash — is a 1947 TEMCO Globe GC-1B Swift, a fixed-wing, single-engine propeller driven plane, owned by Lance Christiansen, according to the FAA’s national aircraft registry.
It is unknown if Christiansen was piloting the Globe GC-1B Swift at the time. I
