Portland’s latest atmospheric river broke rainfall records

It’s sunny skies now, but Portland just experienced some very soggy days.

Between Tuesday and Friday, the Portland International Airport was doused with around 4 inches of rain, according to data collected by the National Weather Service.

The “long-duration atmospheric river” set multiple records in Portland, said Daniel Hartsock, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Portland.

On Wednesday, Hartsock said, the airport got 1.15 inches of rain, setting a daily record for March 11 of any year.

Thursday set another record: 1.73 inches, more than any prior March 12.

That‘s also the most rain that’s fallen on any day in any March on record

It was a rainy day, but far from Portland’s rainiest of all time. That record goes to Nov. 19, 1996, when 2.69 inches of rain were measured at the airport.

Over the wettest 72 hours of the last week, Hartsock said, the airport got 3.67 inches. That’s a lot, but not a record. According to Hartsock, that is the 24th rainiest overall three-day period on record.

While the rain has stopped for now, the after-effects of the deluge are still being felt throughout the area.

On Saturday morning, around 200 residents of Rivers Edge RV Park were displaced due to flooding on the Clatskanie River.

Also Saturday morning, a landslide shut down northbound Interstate 5 near Woodland, Washington.

Dry weather is expected through the weekend, Hartsock said, but rain is back on the menu next week.

“But,” he said, “how much and how many days is still kind of uncertain.”
