Portland’s wet holiday season appears to be coming to an end.
As Christmas trees go out to the curb and decorations come down, the spell of heavy rain and snow that inundated the region in recent weeks is finally petering out, giving way to several days of dry, cool weather in Portland.
Portlanders should still expect to see some precipitation Saturday – but not much. The National Weather Service has forecast a 20% chance of rain showers between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. in Portland, with snow showers above 1,600 feet. After that, the forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies with a high of 46 degrees.
Forecasters said this is the last gasp of a diminishing frontal system that has slowly been making its way across the Cascade Mountains. The drier and cooler weather comes from a ridge of high pressure that will build from Saturday into Sunday. Those conditions are expected to last until the middle of the week, with rain possibly returning by New Year’s Day.
