Police shot and injured an armed suspect in a Portland gas station after he opened fire on officers while they tried to apprehend him, police say.
Nobody else was injured during the shooting, which happened around 9:15 a.m. at a Shell gas station at Southeast 122nd Avenue and Division Street, the Portland Police Bureau said in a statement.
The suspect — who police did not publicly identify — is in police custody and is expected to survive his injuries.
Investigators closed down several blocks in the area of Southeast 122nd and Division as they investigated the shooting, and police spokesperson Mike Benner said that it’s not clear when it will be reopened.
Spokesperson Sgt. Kevin Allen told The Oregonian/OregonLive that the search for the suspect began around 8:45 a.m. at a different gas station in the 8400 block of Southeast Foster Road where the suspect allegedly threatened someone with a gun. Allen did not share any additional details about the incident, but said that it’s also under investigation.
The suspect fled the scene, and a police officer spotted him at the Shell on 122nd. Police called for backup and stopped his car at the station, but he opened fire on them — triggering a firefight that left bullet holes in two nearby cars and injured the man, Allen said. Allen said he wasn’t able to share how many shots were fired, or how many officers fired their weapons.
Police said that the involved officers have been placed on paid administrative leave, per standard protocol.
The officers at the scene gave the man first-aid before emergency responders took him to the hospital, Allen said.
Police said that the incident is still under investigation and ask anyone with information to email homicidetips@police.portlandoregon.gov and reference case number 25-259271.
