Police on Tuesday said an e-scooter rider was traveling the wrong way in a Southeast Portland bike lane on Friday when they collided with the driver of a mini-motorcycle in a fatal crash.

The motorcycle driver, who police identified Tuesday as Stephen W. Hicks, 66, died at the scene.

Hicks was riding in a bike lane near Southeast 122nd Avenue and Southeast Tibbetts Street shortly before 5 a.m. when he collided with an e-scooter rider that was traveling south in the northbound lane, the Portland Police Bureau said in a statement.

Emergency responders drove the e-scooter rider to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries, police said. They have not publicly identified the e-scooter driver.

Both riders were wearing helmets at the time of the crash, police say, and investigators don’t believe that either driver was impaired.

The incident is under investigation. Police ask anyone with information about the crash to direct an email to the traffic investigations unit at crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov and reference case number 26-1563.
