The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office has publicly identified the man who allegedly brandished a gun at TriMet passengers on Wednesday — then triggered an hours-long manhunt after he fled into a North Portland neighborhood.

Michael Sherman, 18, faces charges of menacing, unlawful use of a weapon, interfering with public transportation, second-degree disorderly conduct, third-degree escape, reckless endangerment, carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest, court records show.

The nearly four-hour-long search for Sherman started around 8 a.m. on Wednesday, after he flashed a gun at passengers on a bus, officials said.

Sherman then got off the bus and boarded a MAX train at the North Lombard Transit Center. He stepped out of the train a few stops later at the Rosa Parks MAX station, according to the sheriff’s office.

Transit police officers closed in on the station after he got off the train, but Sherman took off running, fleeing into a residential block between North Maryland Avenue and Montana Avenue, officials said.

Portland’s Bureau of Emergency Communications sent out a lockdown notice to everyone in the area as police surrounded the block to prevent Sherman’s escape.

Portland police spokesperson Kevin Allen said on Wednesday that officials warned administrators at nearby Ockley Green Middle School, who implemented a lockout out of an abundance of caution.

Portland police deployed the Special Emergency Reaction Team to scour the area for Sherman, while residents within the police perimeter stayed inside their homes and waited for an all-clear from officials.

For the next several hours, officers in body armor went house to house searching for the suspect, while K-9 teams tried to pick up a scent and police drones surveyed the scene from the air.

Police eventually found Sherman hiding in the detached garage of a vacant home around 11:30 a.m., and took him into custody without incident, officials said. They found a gun in the backyard of a nearby house.

Sherman’s arraignment is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
